The facility at Kibbutz Lahav was established by Doral Environmental Infrastructures in partnership with Kibbutz Lahav. It is intended for the treatment of various types of organic waste, mainly animal excrement from cowsheds and chicken coops from surrounding communities, combined with agricultural organic waste and source-separated food. The electricity produced in it is sold to the Israel Electric Corporation under a regulation for 20 years.
Gas is produced by an anaerobic digestion (AD) process in which bacteria break down organic waste. This method is used in thousands of facilities around the world and in some facilities in Israel. The products of the decomposition are methane gas used to power internal combustion engines, cooking gas and combustion gas for steam. The products of the process can be used as organic fertilizer for nearby agricultural fields.
It is a sustainable, local and regional end solution for the treatment of organic waste combined with green and renewable energy production, which makes a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
